UOM special handling field

Is there any functionality attached to the W that are put in the special handling field of the units of measure UDC 00/UM for KG & LB ? I know that it is utilized with dual unit of measure functionality since 8.9 but is the W for weight utilized for something else ? It existed before dual unit of measure functionality.
