UOM by customer

All,

Client has customers that define a case in different ways. In the past, they've tried to accomodate their needs and have NOT used UOM conversions. Now, we're setting up conversions and they're contemplating the following:

Assigning different UOM to designate different types of cases (3 to or 5 to) and then making sure that these cases configurations are utilized during packing.

I know that a pivotal table that "could" be used is the F4104, but before I investigate the heavy mods, I want to find out if anyone here has done Item/Customer specific UOM conversions. We want to maintain standard UOM, use the primary on the sales order and work order (we're remanufacturing items) and have this case information define the packing process at the end.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Annie - I am working on a client now that actually do to manufacturing..
set up an item with multiple UOM's each one differentiating what type of
container that it's put into. I believe this would be similar to what you
are asking... they have DR for drums, 05 for 5 gallon pails, etc... Now all
of the pricing is either by Lb or GA (depending on the product), however
they stock in these uom and mfg if necessary into the different until of
measure. Example:

Customer A orders 5 gal bucket

Item ABC 5 05 (uom) at 5.15 GA

Customer A orders 1 Drum

Item ABC 1 DR (uom) at 5.15 GA

It does make it slightly tricky though on pulling the product out of the
warehouse, but what they did was add the UOM to the end of the locations
that that product is stocked in... so for example... bulk stock is -00... Dr
would be -01 and 5 gal bucket would be -05. Customer service has been
trained in that... so if a customer wants a 5 gal bucket of that product...
they pull up the product in the inventory screens and then look at the
locations to see if they have any that end in -05. Please review and let
me know what you think...

thanks, Bobby

Hi!
Its not its intended purpose, but you could look at using the pricing UoM
preference, and then have some minor(ish) changes to P4210 to force this
into the other UoM's. You'd still have to set up some conversions but this
shouldn't require any heavy mods -well in theory! :)

Best regards

Peter

That's where I've gotten to (in my mind) but the problem is this: We actually remanufacture products. We recieve them in on a dock, they're counted, binned and sent into the manufacturing floor. They create a sales order header when they receive them (not how I would have done it, but it's how it's done now). Then, after the items have been placed into the shop floor scene, they create the detail lines of the sales order. So, NOW, is when the shop floor people have to discern if the user wants 3pairs to a case or 5 pairs to a case or whatever. Then, they have to destroy the product that doesn't fit into their configuration and package it according to the customer request. I want to get it to the point where when they enter the product into the sales order, it knows what the default UOM is for the customer/item combination (reeks of F4104). The way you've suggested it would require more interaction on the part of the user, but can be done, I know.

Any additional thoughts?
