We have Ashford and have no horror stories. In fact, we have been able to
convert all our labels in a very short time frame. We create all labels via a
RPG program, but this isn't necessary.

The software is "A" # 1, Both the AS/400 side and the GUI for the client. The GUI is not necessary to produce labeling since the designing can be done on the AS/400 but does significantly improve the process.

TL Ashfords bar-coding solution works very well with JD Edwards. Integration is clean and easy. Modification to the Edwards code to imbed calls to the Ashford label generation API's is easy and clean.

Using the Edwards files is a little clumsy with Ashford since the files in JD Edwards are so fragmented across multiple databases or multiple records. For example, to produce a shipping label by putting say the name and address, together with sales order fields requires you create a database and extraction program that strings the address fields, possibly the Order Number and Customer Part Number across one record. TL Ashford can only handle one merge file per label format. Still not a deterrent to using the software.

Secondly, be sure your printer hardware platforms are supported by TL Ashford. Ashford does not support all hardware manufactures, and you will have difficulty getting drivers from Ashford for "off the wall" type equipment.

I have been involved with TL Ashford for 12+ years and am still excited about their product.

We are using TLA to print several kinds of labels, the output being
generated by our own RPG programs.

No real horror stories to report, the labels are easy to design and look
very impressive.

Three points where we did have problems though, (1) the "black box" routines
they provide do not return any errors, therefore if you pass in an incorrect
value nothing might get printed, (2) when modifying a label the "compiled"
version on the AS400 sometimes gets messed up - you need to delete the
object from the AS400 before re-editing the label format, (3) if printing
labels "upside down" (180 degrees rotation) on the printer, so as to have
them appear in sequence when torn off, labels do not always (on our Zebra at
least) print centrally as they should when not rotated.

Having said that, the TLA support people are nothing short of EXCELLENT.
Very keen to provide a fast turnaround on problems and very knowledgable.

Most of the problems we had, as with any product, are unfamiliarity with the
quirks.

Definitely to be recommended.

We also use TLA. No signifcant problems. Just one warning, though. If you
plan to use it with printers that you already have installed, make sure that TLA
supports them. Or see it they will build the needed interfaces.

Pretty stable, we here in Baxter use it to print almost 95 % of our labels
requirement. Only thing that you should be concerned is making sure your
label printer is compatible. Initially, we had problem when printing 50 or
more pages of labels especially on our remote printers. I'm not sure if it
has something to do with printer memory but labels got corrupted or
misaligned intermittently.

We create the data structure sent to the label via RPG and then call the TLA
subroutine to print the label. Ashford has sample RPG programs, along with
sample CL. They also provide sample labels and instructions how to print
without a RPG program. We use Ashford to produce receiving labels, so I
modified the receipt program to build a simple data structure and then call
their routine to print our new Ashford label. Very easy to do and if you do
run into any problems, TLA support is great. Debbie Kazinski

With the address book you can create and CONCATENATED file with all the
fields from the address book into one file - F01901 - Look at MENU G0131
option 18 - this may help 'a little'
