If an item can have, but isn't required a finish, how many item master rows do you need for it?

Example: Custs A, B, and C all have different packaging for a base product (doughnut).
They can order the doughnut as plain, or glazed.
We'd have six finished good item masters rows.
(Cust A Plain, Cust A Glazed, Cust B Plain, Cust B Glazed, Cust C Plain, Cust C Glased).

We'd have ONE item master for the intermediate mfg'd item (plain doughnut).

Do I need an item master for the glazed doughnut, or
can I set the glazing up as a feature/option on the plain doughnut's Bill O'Material?

My hope is that YES, it does work as a feature/option and that it gets specified on the WO to make the doughnut (w/out packaging).
(Further, that the glazing IS inventoried and lot controlled.)

Would someone be so kind as to post a brief tutorial on features/options?

Please AND Thanks
Gene
