I've made a few contributions to this list (hopefully some helpful), I hope it
has earned me the right to diverge from the standard post for a moment. If
not, I apologize in advance.

I'm beginning to see the market players in the JDE community unable to resist
temptation to use this list as a marketing tool or lead-generator. I believe
this to be bad form.

I believe Mr. Kempter has created this list for altruistic collaboration and
not a marketplace to troll for new clients.

Would anyone else like to weigh in on this, or am I all alone out there?

You are not alone. I too believe it is wrong and if we allow it to be used
in this manner, it will cease to be a valuable tool because most of us will
not take the time to sift through it. We will just dump it.

I have no problem with their monitoring this listing and responding to
individuals as they see appropriate. Just leave it off the list.

Just my two cents.

I also hate to see this type of post. So, perhaps, besides Eric deleting their profile, i suggest we get another forum going where we could list the names of the companies that we should try to avoid dealing with in the future. After all, there are many, many different vendors to choose from out there.

Hey, why not? I'm not in favor of posting "commercials", but have no problem with people trying to get some business in the course of responding.

If JDE or PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers) or a JDE BP (Business Partner) is your only source for finding JDE expertise or information about JDE & other products, then you are being short-changed and under-informed.

When I want to know about a product I prefer to get several opinions:
> from a user of the product
> from the seller of the product
> from a maintainer of the product

This forum would be less valuable if it provided information from only the user...

By the way, has anyone actually gotten work through this forum? Or, from the other side, has anyone hired through this forum?

I'm totally agree with you. I think that the list is a free comunity, where
we can exchange contributions and experience. If some enterprises need to
made bussines, they may put a list or their list of service into a directory
into the web, when we know where to find it.

I hope all together can make something with this "issue".

Salut!

Folks,

There is nothing that can be done to stop people from harvesting JDEList Mailing Lists for leads short of disallowing virtual mailboxes such as hotmail, etc. and that's not going to happen. If you feel that you are being spammed as a result of being on a JDEList, please check the JDEList FAQ Forum for information on what to do about it.

Thank you,

RE: jdecoldcall@jdecoldcalling.com?

IMHO, I do not think this is the place for commercials. If I am impressed
with the posts I see on the list, then I can contact the sender off line if
I so desire. I would not respond to nor appreciate unsolicited contacts
offering services from this board. The purpose of this board is information
and expertise, not people and services.

No one is proposing that only users may post. What is being discussed is
employment commercials. I believe that there are a great number of
consultants on the list who participate both with questions and solutions.
Consultants do not have a monopoly on knowledge. Sometimes even they have a
question.

Off my soapbox,

Bill

Based on my interpretation of the comments about getting work through this
medium, why would anyone admit to getting work?

Hello
Here is my 2 cents on it, well sort of. On the one hand he is telling you about a problem that you may run into. He is also giving you a way to contact him to discuss it with him further. Yes he is probably try to pick you up as a client but he is offering the advice and you can say NO.

I think this forum needs both the consultants and non consultants (Note: I am not a consultant, see signature for details). Consultants can help because they are out in the field getting prospective from many different clients. To kick someone off this forum because they sent this type of letter to you is wrong. Remember you do have that little "X" on you e-mail program that can delete it.

This message is by no means trying to tell you what to do or think. I thank you all for your time...that is my 2 cents.

Now this is a funny thing!
1-Consultants are usually exposed to many, many or I could really say A LOT of difficult and different problems.
2-Therefore it is very probable they are experienced.
3-And, sometimes, if you don't hurt their feelings, they're also ready to share their expertise.
4-Especially when they have time to get into the Forum.
5-I mean when they are out of work, between contracts.
6-Should we interfere? Would it be a ... "good" idea to help them get work? Wouldn't it?
7-My quick answer is Yes, allow them gaining MORE expertise, they might be able to share it!
8-You know, a ... help in need hides a friend ... indeed.

I prefer to see this list maintained as a free forum where everyone Users, JDE,
and Business Partners share what they can without the expectation of future
business commitments. I have both contributed and asked a few questions of the
list and have found it to be a great tool.

Even as a business partner I don't want to see this list used for attracting
potential business. There are already several websites designed with this in
mind.

However we can't stop users from contacting implementors they see on this list.

As a sponsor of this list, I thought I could put a quick 2 cents in:
1. I hope a roaring round of applause echoes across the JDE community for the efforts Eric has singlehandedly put into creating what we believe to be the best forum out there for we the weary and battle scarred. The main reason we continue to sponsor this forum is the strict adherence to independence and freedom of exchange without interference.
2. As a major consulting firm we recognize the temptation to capitalize on this forum, however solicitation should not and must not be introduced here. So many other forums are so blitzed with the got this... need this.. how 'bout us? type of postings that they are rendered useless. I believe that all firms out there should participate in the sharing of (dare I say it?) free advice and information. We try to whenever time allows, and in return we receive back equal tips and ideas that have saved countless hours and dollars at client sites. Masking a spam by replying to someone's posting is heinous but as was said before, let's not scare away the consultants input, as they usually have the broadest point of view.
3. I hope that many other firms out there are regularly offering a helping hand whenever possible. The more the merrier! Also, since we are the ones making the profits on the problems, I invite and challenge all other firms to contact Eric and write a check to help make this list continue to evolve. You will get much more than just a banner rotating above you probably already are!

I didn't mean to intrude, but I wanted to get this off my chest. I hope I didn't offend.

Re: jdecoldcall@jdecoldcalling.com?

What I think are good guidelines from another highly technical forum:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Commercial messages are allowed if they contain a modicum of interesting information for all members of this list. If in doubt - please contact the list admin.....

I know, it's vague, but so are all regulations which attempt to establish ground rules without regulating everything to death."
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The spirit is as follows:

This is a highly technical list. Part of it is discussion about equipment and/or software and/or services, and once it is discussed, people often want to know where they can get it and how much it costs. This list has many subscribers with commercial interests, and most master the un-offensive announcement of services & products with panache.

And practically, who makes the determination that something is an offensive post? With all due respect to Eric, I don't want him deciding what is good for me and what is not! We can easily delete the messages that aren't interesting (which we do every day) without empowering the list-police to make that decision for us.

Frankly, I'm surprised and pleased by how professional and uncluttered the list remains relative to other forums.

I have to agree they have done an outstanding job on this site. In the
future for those of you that want to post commercial, want ads, etc... goto
http://63.98.220.243/discussion and you can post that sort of junk there all
you want.
