Component substitutions

Can someone tell me how to apply component substitutions to the parts list on a work order? I don't want to have to update the parts list directly. I would rather use the processing option on P31410 for substitutions. But, I don't know how it works. Any help is appreciated.

You set substitutes on the BILL OF MATERIAL.
Also, a p/opt on WORK ORDER PRINT allows the substitute to print due to shortage.

In addition to what gpiekarski replied, you must have the manufacturing
constants (P3009) set to hard-commit at creation of the parts list.

Does the part have to be short on inventory in order for the substitution to take effect?

If R31410 is set for substitution and the BOM has been defined with
substitutes, the following will occur:
- original component has enough inventory = no substitute;
- original has inventory but not enough = if substitute definition in BOM
authorizes partials, then you will deplete the original component and the
balance will come from the substitute else, if the substitute definition
does not authorize partials, then you will get 100% of the substitute.
