SMTP and client email configuration

I have configured for SMTP email on 2 separate machines (both ERP8.0 on Windows XP Prof) mapped to the same exchange server. One is on a VM server on my local pc with local Outlook installation and the other on a remote VM server with no Outlook installation. INI files are the same. I can send/receive emails via telnet commands from both servers and the E1 apps server however only the local E1 install can send emails from P012501 while the remote one cannot. It gives following error:

2988/2600 Mon Jul 20 09:07:49 2009 jdesmtp.c932
connectToSMTPserver : connect failed
sin_family = AF_INET
sin_port = (printed in host byte order) 25
sin_addr = 172.20.50.48
Operating system error : <No such file or directory>

2988/2600 Mon Jul 20 09:07:49 2009 jdesmtp.c781
Leaving JDE_SendEMailSMTP with an error return code : <22>

Does anyone know if the local windows mail configuration is required for this functionality to work (or interferes with its working?) Doc ott-00-0032 doesnt say anything about this

thanks

Not entirely sure what you mean by "see" in this context. Its not mapped but can be pinged and responds to telnet commands issued at the c: prompt
