Remote Development / Object Transfer

There have been numerous threads on this subject but I have not found any
white papers on the various options. PC anywhere is too slow and you need to
be connected to the network. I read an article on a product called "Vice
Versa", but have not found any information on it - I understand you can
develop off line using the Standalone version of OneWorld and then transfer
/ check in the specs when you have reconnected to the central objects server
- can anyone give me specific information on where to learn about this
technology / technique. How about checking out objects on fat client when
I'm in the office then disconnecting from network and continuing development
off-line - Why do I need to be connected to central objects / security
server ?

Hi Derek

Even though you are developing on your local specs, you are still using the Enterprise server. When you add a Data Dictionary Item to a form or section, it needs to retrieve it from the F92* DD tables. When you add a form to an application, it creates a record in F9865. This list goes on.

Because a number of tables get updated during development, it can be tricky to get your changes back onto the Enterprise even using OW Standalone and Snapshot (Snapshots basically swaps your local specs between DV7333 and DEMO.

We have used this technique to move custom objects from our Enterprise to OW Standalone for sales Demonstration purposes, and works fine, but we don't need to worry about synchronising tables which is the main issue when getting the development back onto the Enterprise. This becomes bit of an administrative nightmare. This is where I understand Vice Versa is the better alternative.

Please let us know how you get on.

Kind regards
Terry
