You should be able to convert it to ASCII within the CPYTOIMPF command - specify *PCASCII as the TOCCSID. If you do not have that listed as a valid parameter option, then you may need to apply a PTF to make it available - I can't remember what version needed the PTF in order to have PCASCII as an option. I have done this in several programs and it works just fine.
