Passing username from E1 web session to another web app

We are looking at developing a custom web app that will be used by JDE users. If that app is linked to from their JDE web session, can the app determine who the user is signed on as? The app will be running on the same app server as E1. Should I be looking at session info or messaging or something else?

E1 8.11SP1
Websphere 5.0.2
