Managing Hazmat transportation

Does anyone have a good method for managing the distribution of goods that fall into various hazmat classifications. JDE World offers the shipping conditions code, but hazmat is far more complex and varied than can be handled by a single code, and the shipping conditions code is not designed to flag an item in a way Customer Service could quickly identify shipping requirements while talking to a customer about an order.

We really need something that let's CS know up front, before completing an order, that some goods on the order require special handling based on at least half a dozen factors (what, how much, where, type of transport, etc).

How about placing an automatic hold on the item/sales order when it is added to a sales order.

You could call it an ‘HZ’ hold, for example, indicating that the item is Hazardous material...

The person responsible for releasing this type of hold should be the person who determines the special handling requirements for hazardous items, and once those factors are identified and the necessary documentation and Material Safety Data Sheet has been generated for the item they then release the 'HZ' hold from the sales order so it can be processed.
