Looking for best practices on when to create sales order document types

Hello,

I am looking for a white paper or documentation on when and why to create new sales order document types in JDE. I'm currently working on a project to simplyfing reporting from the SOM module. It seems like new doc types are created each time a new product is sold (I may be exaggerating a bit but not that much). I would like to provide guidelines to power users without having to write that white paper myself. So if you have seen such document before, please let me know.

Thank you Andy, the document was very helpful and very close to what I was looking for.

I still decided however to create a white paper for my customer with a focus on criteria to decide if a new order type must be created or not. I am attaching this document here if that can be useful to others as well.
