Hardware Protection Code vs. Software Protection Code?

Can someone tell me the difference between a JDE Hardware Protection Code
and a JDE Software Protection Code? My organization just installed a new
iSeries and we are going to have one LPAR for the Production system and
another LPAR for the Test System. Will we need a separate Software
Protection Code for each LPAR? and just one Hardware Protection Code for
the iSeries? Is the PS/JDE Response Line using two names for the same
code or are they really two separate "codes"? Thank you!!!

Nancy,
I think these are two names for the same code. I have not had to deal
with LPAR's on the same system, so do not know if you need a separate
software protection code for each one. Maybe someone else can answer that
part of your question. Software protection code is the term that I use. If
you go to the JDE Knowledge Garden and click on the Support tab in there,
there is a section called software protection code that you can click on and
see more information. CPU serial number is part of what is used to generate
the software protection code. Hope this helps a bit.

Your SPC is the 6 character code you see from the JDE System Values screen on G94. You get a new one if your current one expires or you change # of users. I have also had to get new ones when I get a new 400 (replacing the existing one).

The other value I have occasionally had to deal with is something they called the Install Code. This is a long code you never really see anywhere and I can't remember how to get to it (you have to call something like J98LSF or something like that...). This code has occasionally been incorrect after we have upgraded or changed boxes. If I recall, you get an error code when trying to sign in to the environment and you have to call JDE to get a new one. This is NOT the same as the SPC code. It will be a code like "L12347M134N23P25". This code does NOT need to be updated each time you get a new SPC code from an expiring code or change of # of users. Hope that helps?

I also have not had to deal with seperate LPARS so can't help you there.
