Client Update Package Times on Windows XP

We have a few Windows XP clients we are experimenting with and have noticed that client update packages are VERY slow in being applied. On both clients, the update process stops at the 20% progress mark for about 20 minutes, and then proceeds on to finish within 1-2 minutes. Typically, our update packages may take 1-2 minutes total to complete. Has anyone else done any testing or found any known problems with Windows XP clients?

There is a system recovery setting in Xp that must be
turned off. This setting, when enabled allows Xp to
recover itself better if files get hosed. Since
deployments are nothing more than moving a *bunch* of
files, Xp chokes when trying to index(?) them for
system recovery.

Instead of committing developer resources to make the
OS more stable, MS chooses to make the OS more
recoverable after the crash.

Someone else can probably provide better details about
this 'feature', possibly including the area where the
setting it.

You HAVE to have system restore turned OFF if you are going to use it
with XP..I wrote about this earlier..
You can turn it off by right-clicking on the 'my computer' icon and
then selecting the 'system restore' tab. There is a check mark, just
uncheck it, and it is off...

Re: RE: Client Update Package Times on Windows XP

brother_of_kara and John,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I turned off the system restore on the Win XP client, and the time to accept the update package went from 20 minutes down to one and one-half minutes. Thanks again for the quick replies and VERY useful information.

Re: RE: Client Update Package Times on Windows XP

Whoa!!! I've been wondering these past 2 days why my Win XP has been stalling on the Updates Install!

Thank You JDEList!

Re: RE: Client Update Package Times on Windows XP

Stalling the update packages?
It used to fail to install them overhere on the XP machines after a while.

SP20_C1 should be the solution to that, Works so far.

Don

there are a number of SARs relating to this, we have had the same issue on XP clients - its quicker to recompress the parent package and reinstall !!

What is the use of recompressing the parent package?

I personally never compress my Full packages.
Saves me time when building it and when it needs to be re-deployed to a station I don't have to think about it of I did recompress it after the last update package or not. make life easier ;o)

Actually just simply turning off the System Restore solved my problem :) Anyway, I don't think I'll be needing that function as well.
