Hi I have don a brand new install....Xe update 5 with sp18.1. I find that pacakge build is painfully slow ( we are talking about compaq dual process server and 4 Gb of RAM... now when the busbuild goes it just takes up 1 % of cpu is there any way to increase this...
Similarly the Egenration only take 1% of CPU is there any way to increase the speed

JaiseJames,

Slow is a relative term!!! Can you please tell us how long the build are
taking.

thanks,

Andy

Jaise,
how long is "painfully slow" for you in hours and minutes?
Is the server you mentioned the ES or DS?
What are you building? Full packages? Client and server simultanioulsy?
Did you check if your anti-virus is turned off?
Thanks, Gerd

Hi,
Well as i mentioned busbuild itself take about 6-7 hours which I am sure i snot right I have done many installation before and nevwe seen somethign running that slow....
I am build a full client and server package. after the freshinstal and after applying the XU5 and SP18.1

I would also like to know if there is any improvement that can be done. In our case, we also use similar time in busbuild. Our site is running on a 4-way AIX 4.3 with 4G of RAM. Oracle is 8.1.7

Cheers,
Alvin

DS: NT

That would be Oracle tuning.

6h is fairly common if no special attention has been given to Oracle. I've seen package build times up to 24h with Oracle, but that was really extreme...

For comparison, on a HP system I recently built it takes ~2h 45min to complete the Client package part and ~30min for the Server part.

Of course, with SQL Server it's usually even faster and with AS/400 - usually much slower.

Regards,
Alex.

What 'special attention' has to give to Oracle? increase in log file size, turning off the archive log, or enlarging the SGA?

Cheers,
Alvin

Alvin,

The usual stuff - there are some 50 odd parameters you should look at and
the actual settings, of course, will be site-dependant, so I can hardly give
you any values without seeing the system.

Regarding your suggestions though, with SGA the "shared_pool_size" generally
should be under 100M (50M is usually enough and more tends to deteriorate
the performance), only "db_block_buffers" should be large. The log file size
I usually keep reasonably small - maybe 20MB or so, but there should be more
than 3 groups (or at least more than 2)...

Disk configuration is extremely important - and is usually overlooked.

Who is the customer? Is it Li&Fung?

J,

I recently had something like this. It turned out that the client had used
disk compression on deployment and the Enterprise Server. This made
everything very slow. You may want to ensure that this is not the same in
your case.

Hi Alex
In our setup, I have seen the package build time( client build) vary from 6 to 12 hour. I have noticed that the spec build time keep on varing..Within Spec build it is basically the time for "No of TAMs record fetched" and "Creation of Indexes" that veries". I have not looked into Oracle database tuning for these things till now.. But are you saying that package build is dependant upon database tuning?? If yes then can you please tell me what parts of package build..impact the performance of database... so that I can watch the performance of database during the various stages of package build and tune the database.
