Help: How about the career future of a JDE specialist?

I just got a job to support and implement JDE (old version) at manufacturing company (American top 500), but don't know the future of this kind of job. Can I still find better positions after one or two years' experience in JDE?
Please help me out. Thanks!

Which version of JDE?
How can you implement and support it if you have no experience?
What is your background?

OK, here we go. It's obvious that the original poster thinks that an older
version of JDE is beneath him and not a good career move. I guess we don't
have to clue him in that there are thousands of us who have made our living
for decades with JD Edwards. Maybe he'll figure it out eventually. If not,
I'm sure there's lots of SAP clients for him to go to after a year or so.

Starting with a professional question:

How to support and implement JDE (old version)?

Pardon me Jeff,

I'm new to this JDE thing. Can you tell me how to impliment clustered webservers running on nintendo playstations? And if you have a minute, how to tune up my car and perform brain surgury on my dog? Thanks!

After all the attacks, I'm sure you'll return to JDEList for more help. To offer my opinion on your question, which is whether or not JDE support is a deadend position, my answer is "Any position will only take you as far as you are willing to go."

Will you be able to move from JDE to another application/technology support role or even to another career? That is entirely up to you, isn't it?

Will support of JDE take you directly to Oracle technology, which isn't going to disappear unless SAP or Microsoft obliterates their business share? Quite possibly.

Ares,

If you are new to JDE, it will take a good year or two to get up to speed. JDE is very expensive. Expensive to buy, and even more expensive to impliment and maintain. Companies are not going to run out and impliment the latest thing, just because a software company rolls out a new release. Take a look at JDE World. JDE tried to make it go away, and yet customers hung on (and are still hanging on) to a very old release of the software. Oracle has committed to support OneWorld until 2013 and there are third party companies (Klee Associates and TomorrowNow) that will support the software even longer. So no, you are not entering into a deadend career. Welcome to the club, especially since you've been baptised by flames!

Gregg,
It was well said.

Ares,
Please, do not feel yourself discouraged after the "flames".

You are welcome aboard of JDEList.

Read you later,

Regards,

Zoltán

Jeff,

LOL, ROTF. Too darn funny. Now if we can only multitask and perform the pet brain surgury while in the back of the freshly tuned up family van, playing with our multiple controllers for our sony playstation, we'd be all set!

I don't know the version since I still don't start my new career, but was told by the interviewer.
I have solid experience in CRM implementation and support, and excellent ability to learn, I think that's why my futher employer selected me.
Thanks for your reply.

Re: RE: Help: How about the career future of a JDE specialist?

What I care most is not the version of JDE, but where can I go with JDE experience after two or more years. But I am very glad that you told me I can turn to SAP. Thanks Andy.

cmanderson, you are just like a philosopher, but your opinion really helps me a lot. I have to make my decision and struggle for a better future. Thanks for your advice.

Gregg,

Thanks for your information. It's very helpful for me to make a decision to work hard on JDE. And I am sure it will be a prosperous career now. Very nice to meet you here.
