using variables on a data item

Can anyone tell me how JDE uses the error message data items which have a variable(s) in them? I.E. 018A, 019S, 4660, 4761, etc. I am assuming these are used by doing a sndmsg. I was looking at trying to use this in the normal JDE message handling (showing up in the F7 on a display screen).
