I had read your thread and had a suggestion you may want to try.
I have run into this issue many times, and have found in many cases the problem is the following.
At the very end of the SP installation process, many different system files (DLL's, registry), etc, get replaced and updated on the deployment server. IF another program is running in memory that has a lock on any of those system files, then the installation will fail.
The most common program I've seen that will cause this problem are virus scanning tools. (mcafee, norton av or innoculan) In other cases, different programs have been the culprit.
I usually end all these programs through the services option in Windows, as well as any other services that may cause problems. Another one is the Protected Storage option.
I would try stopping all the non-essential services that I can, then retry the installation again. Hopefully this will help!
