Paper Reels in Advanced Warehousing

[frown] We have a situation with the handling of Paper Reels in Advanced Warehousing. Information as follows:
1) Individual Paper Reels have different weights
2) Lot control is used
3) Paper Reels are stored on top of each other in locations

The main issue is how can we always pick the top reel - this will prevent a lot of movements to pick a specific reel with the specific weight selected (sometimes they are stored 3 reels high). We thought about virtual positions but if the middle reel is picked for some reason the system is recognising the middle position as being empty and the top reel still in the top position but physically the top reel is put back onto the first one. Any suggestions ?

Nelpj,
You need to issue a transfer in conjunction with the pick. If the rolls are numbered or otherwise coded, you would record the move to the empty location.

Nelpj,
We are in a similar situation with rolls of steel and have considered using the idea of a 'virtual' stock area to track which roll is on which level (in addition to where it actually resides).
This three dimensional view of stock locations works but if you have to use the roll that is not on top you simply have to let the system know by doing a transfer. If you are like us, this should be an occasional situation.
Or do the workers, as a rule, pick out a reel that is not on top on a regular basis ? If this is the case, you might want to invest in some RF software that would make these transfers easy.
Regards,
Dave

The problem is with the different weights, the top reel might be say 1296 kg and the middle one 1198. The customer is ordering 1200 kg and then the middle one is picked to comply with the customers order.
