MPS/MRP Generation

Hi Lists,
These can be the basic questions but the client likes to know:
1. How MPS/MRP generation works ? I mean can we run it interactively but not leave it runs batch midnight ? If it works this way, how is other transactions be affected (or blocked) when on line run R3482/R3483 ?
2. Client has 20,000 MRP items and in average 4 layers in BOM structure, can we have the general time how long to explore the MRP in OW ? I know this can be different by hardware specs but can we have a reference number for it ?
3. Does the "parallel" processing option work ? Does anyone use it to run R3482/R3483 ? Should somethings we care if try to use it ? (hardware ? application setup ? ...etc)
Thanks for the help providing any experiences or comments.

Hi John,

1. Batch MRP is not designed to run during periods when its base information (supply, demand, on-hand) is in "flux" due to in-process transactions. If your transaction volume is low, you "could" run MRP at the same time as normal user activity. However you would never want anyone to be Reviewing/Processing MRP messages (P3411) at the same time MRP is running. Normal supply/demand/inventory transactions will not be blocked by MRP processing.

2. With 50,000 items our full MRP run is around 1 hour.

3. Parallel processing does work apparently. Search this site for posts by Altquark on this subject.

If you must do this during the day then I would suggest running a full regen nightly or weekly, and only do "Net Change" MRP runs during the day. This should reduce your exposure significantly.

Alternatively if your users just want to run for a single item or two using data selection this can be done also with little risk.

Regards,
