Launch IM from a row exit in One World (Instant Messenger)

I'm sure that someone has done this. Please help me. We have started populating IM names into the address book (we're using the salutation field). The information is included in a custom application. Our users want a row exit to launch IM and populate the IM name and part of the message from information in the grid row.
Has anybody done this (and would you share the method and set-up)?
