8.11 client setup.exe

List, we've been having this issue for quite some time and I'm hoping you might have some ideas for us. When running the "fat client" package install (full and/or update), setup.exe will spin for as long as 15 to 20 minutes before returning the package selection screen. This is true on any Wintel box, even 3.x GHZ w/ 1GB of RAM. Anti-Virus is off and the package inf folder is small.

Anything at all would be much appreciated.

Thank-You,

Michael

Hi Mike,

I remember that on earlier releases (such as B7331) that
"spinning time" was noticeably reduced by mapping a
Windows drive (such as X:) on the Fat Client to the
JDE share folder \\yourdeploymentname\e811.
I haven't tested that trick on newer releases such as 8.11

Sebastian, thank-you for responding. That's exacly how were "setup", all fat and Citrix have a mapped drive to the DS. Someone once mentioned they thought it was the total # of mapped drives and that setup.exe would search through every drive looking for an installed client but when we disconnect all drives, we have the same problem. Thanks again. Michael

p.s. I thought for sure other might be having this same issue.

Have you tried uninstalling your AV or adding in a directory exclusion within
the AV? Also, I have seen Novell clients causing this.

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

Have you defragged the drive lately? E1 is really hard on a drive, especially during implementation as there are many update and full packages running.

Try a defrag and as you said your virus scanner is off, which is good.

lemieux,

We have the same thing going on. Were you ever able to find a resolution?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Stewart

perharps you can use the Oracle preconization, before install your packahe, disable system restoration (dont forget to restore the option after, but you'll have to restart your PC).
Also don't forget to inactive the AV before deploying and especially uf you use notron.

Switching off anti virus is often not enough, as the file system driver is
still loaded. Try adding an exclusion to the E1 folder.

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

We are experiencing the same problem. is this possibly and e8.11 SP1 with 8.95 problem? Has anyone resolved this issue? Installing an update package with 1 report R0006P takes me 36 minutes with the harddrive spinning hard the whole time.

-I only have one network drive mapped to e811
-I stop Antivirus software services
-I have defragmented my harddrive
-Installing to Windows 2000 Professional so there is no issues with XP system restore being on.
-The parent full package only has 3 update packages created, I am installing the third update package

Any other suggestions?

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

Hi,

Have you run a disk audit while it's installing the
package? It would show you what it's doing.
My client had quite a few surprises on E810 Tools 8.94,
every time I deployed an update package it reinstalled
MSDE, the -+infamous+- BPM Broker, more Java stuff, etc.
They discovered that by dropping them from the .INF
(I think in OneWorld Client Install) the deploying of
updates ran much faster.
Most of these components (MSDE, BPM, etc) are needed just
for the first time you install a full package on the PC.

Do you have an exclusion defined in the av software for the E810 folder?
(regardless of the fact that the av is turned off)

Kieran

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

Thanks for the Tip Sebastian. I ran the install with extra logging enabled and I could see some of those objects including MSDE and BMP broker being installed. So I tried removing references for them out of some inf files but they still installed so I just renamed the directory where the install files were stored so they would not install. Unfortunately, this only cut out maybe 4-5 minutes from my install so it is still taking me just over 30 minutes to install an update package with only R0006P in it.

Any other ideas?

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

Hi,

Try the following : when building the update package
don't select any of the compression checkboxes.
Had a trouble with this, it installed the whole Foundation
from scratch everytime I deployed an update package.

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

I have a feeling a lot more than one object is being installed when I deploy an update package with just R0006P.

So I tried looking carefully at all my update package build options but I didn't see anything about compression. Is there somewhere else where I need to look that predefines what goes into an update package?

Re: RE: 8.11 client setup.exe

Hi,

When you build your package, you pass thru 3 screens :
Specs Building (yes or no), BSFN Building (Yes or no)
and compression (that's where I uncheck all the boxes).
