Usage of TREF (Transaction Reference) within F4111 (Item Ledger)

Anyone know what TREF field is used for within F4111 (JDE 9.x implementation project)? I'm trying to determine if a third-party application can safely write information to this field without upsetting standard JDE functionality.

Tried searching on jdelist and Oracle Support but didn't find the answer.

Hello

I know that it is used for lot trace and track (next level identification) and also during Ship Confirm transactions.

We do have third party applications writing in this field during WO transactions but haven't experienced any issues. We use custom trace and track though.
