E9.2 Workflows in R23 - Who's done em, who finds 'em useful, and is there any way around the default email system?

Who has done a useful workflow in R23 orch??

Is there a valid way to handle workflow approval steps without needing the backwards email setup via address book??

I'm aargh with the potential of the tool and its "artificial" limitations. I need to be able to send a workflow approval to anyone at any email address determined at runtime and have things work, within reason.

Stream of consciousness gripe, sorry if I'm just completely mistaken in any of my assumptions

There's a reason I make bitter beer face every time they talk about workflow and updating it / bringing it back to life. Unfortunately the backwards email setup is the only way I know.
