Virtual 3 Tier & Web Sever

Hi List,

We just had a sizing carried out for us (by IBM) for a new EnterpriseOne 8.9
installation and the suggestion is for a 'Virtual 3 Tier & Web Server'. This
machine is the usual 'specification level' of an Intel Enterprise Server but
there is no separate web server being suggested. Is it possible now to
combine the enterprise and web servers in EO8.9 ?

Also the deployment server is referred to as the 'Development and Generator
Server' which I assume means that in EO8.9 a package build can generate JAS
serialized objects as it goes - any thoughts ?

Regards

Re: Virtual 3 Tier & Web Sever

Hi Andy,

For my two quids worth, I would avoid combining an enterprise and web server. As the guys slugging it out in the AS400 vs Intel debate point out, hardware is cheap.

I had heard about the deployment server generating java code at some point. I guess we have reached that point.

The thing I keep hearing rumors about is that EO 8.9 or higher will require websphere for managing security. I would like to know if that is accurate......

Thanks for your input Gregg. I also am doubtful about combining enterprise
and JAS servers but this is what the IBM sizing has suggested. If the
combined approach is used the next step is to understand HOW to do this
because the new install of EO8.9 I did in the lab last week did not seem any
different from Xe / ERP8.

Will be building a package shortly so will update on how this can generate
JAS objects and can also see if Websphere IS mandatory for security etc -
unless anyone already knows ?

Re: Virtual 3 Tier & Web Sever

Hi Andy !

Hows things !

Sure, it is POSSIBLE to combine the AS/400's into the same machine - but, would you want to ?

It requires purchasing a substantially larger AS/400 to cope with the extra load - which is far more expensive than purchasing smaller AS/400's - or even intel web servers...

I don't like the idea of the Deployment server working as the generator - it seems to me that JDE are apt at trying to combine equipment together to attempt to reduce hardware costs - but why ? hardware is cheap, and I can do package builds on the deployment server WHILE the generator is running on a workstation - which reduces time substantially.

I'd use common sense when these type of decisions come flying down from IBM or JDE - additional hardware provides redundancy and therefore tasks become less complex to manage if the administrator has to multitask....
