Replacement of Equipment in Plant Maintenance?

We are using Equipment/Plant maintenance module in OW Xe to track equipment and maintenance at the water treatment plant.
Do you have to create a new item in JDE? if the Original was pump 101 than now this replaced item will have to be pump 105. One issue is blue prints of the plant now have to reference the new item number together with all documentation changed which references the original item#.
I am sure other folks do this all the time, how would you replace equipment which is in the same location replacing the original item and serving the same purpose? And must continue to keep history?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

There is an applciation to replace/change equipemnt at location. i think this is what you are looking for. Look into P & E menu and you should get it.
