Create MPS / MRP Order Messages Without Demand

How can we get MRP to create "order messages" for lower level items for parent items that have work orders with no sales order or forecast demand?

We sometimes have the situation where we want to manufacture a R&D item. We insert a work order for this item but get a "cancel" message because MPS does not have any demand to support it. We can still make the item however, planners do not get "order messages" for the lower level items because of the "cancel" message for the parent. The lower levels have "cancel parts list" messages.

We do not want to create a sales order or forecast to handle this situation. Any alternative solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try setting the Freeze Flag in the work order header to "Y".

Try adding a safety stock quantity for the end item (R&D item) on the item branch quantities screen. Safety stock is another form of demand in absence of forecast or sales orders.

Devo's answer of using the Freeze Flag is correct. However, there is an alternative. In the Processing Options of R3482 there is a Generation Type "5" Frozen MPS. This will treat ALL Work Orders as Frozen if the Item has a Planning Code of "1".

You may also consider the use of Freeze Fence. MRP cannot Cancel an Order within the Freeze Fence. One final thought: if you create the WO and Attach the Parts List, then push the WO Status beyond the R3482's "Firm Planned Status" then the MRP just might plan for Component Demand. Worth a try... However, the Freeze Flag may remain the best option.
