Hi Dan
Looking on the internet, the following server works extremely well :
(I chose DELL - though any similar branded spec machine would work fine)
Total price on Dell's website for this was $6,599 - extremely reasonable for a blistering fast machine.
some of the reasons for choosing several options :
1. Choose 2.8GHz processors - they're only 7-8% slower than the 3.06GHz processors but they're substantially cheaper ($600 cheaper all in all)
2. Choose 18GB, 15k RPM drives - providing a total drive volume of 36Gb under RAID 5. RAID 5 is fine for READING - and these drives would fly. You only require the standard pathcodes hence the lower volume requirements.
3. Choose 2Gb RAM - actually this might be undersized depending on what you are looking for. You need lots of memory if you want to run lots of kernels or runube's in parallel. This system can go to 3b for only $460 more.
4. Choose the ability to go from 100Mb Ethernet to a full gigabit connection - whether its copper or fibre. Fibre is fastest since latency is less. You will see a LOT of network traffic between any application server and the Database Server. Remember, your AS400 might not have the capability of having Gigabit until the 8xx series.
Hope that helps !!!
