Speaking of Manuals...

Howdy, it's Wednesday... March 13, 2002 and the midpoint to eternity....

Ok, back to business... JDE provides the PDF format of each module and
gives a level of detail how thing are supposed to work. JDE also has
appendices that contain the updates - in PDF format.

But... (you knew the but was coming), I like to have something I can write
on, dog-ear the pages and take to the firing range(when I am frustrated)...
and I have been able to find the manuals in paper form.

YES, I know that I could 'just print' the PDFs (One sided pages times
thirteen zillion trees). I live in the Northwestern United States - we like
our trees here... but we like to make sure that they 'went to GREAT' use,
also.

So, who prints the PDFs in a bound form? I didn't receive feedback when I
asked JDE... Is the documentation for the modules available 'somewhere' in
paper product?

Suggestions are always welcome.

I can't help with the publishing, but I have a client with some printers that print double sided AND at reduced size so there is 4 pages per sheet. You might see what more advanced printers are available to you......... While I'm thinking, I once ordered published copies from the JDE website. Did that go away?

I print manuals all the time. I give them to my users to aid them when using the software.

I have a HP Lazer printer. Go into the printer properties and select 'User's Manual' under quick sets. This will print 4 pages per paper-2 per side. It is small but I also like to have something to write on!

Just a suggestion. Hope it helps!

which is a better use of trees?

You print what you need - as and when, or every user gets a printed copy of
every manual?

By the way you can print double sided, or even multiple pages to a sheet, if
your printer will allow, and save even more trees!

Personally, I never use the paper manuals, I much prefer to use the
electroic ones for their grep-ability. Plus, I prefer not to waste
trees as well.

You could always take it down to your local Kinko's (Or equivalent copy shop). They should have the capability. It may cost a bit, but I know most of them have the ability to at least do rudimentary binding. Who knows, if you print alot maybe they'll give you a volume discount! The only problem may be that some of them would want to ensure you're not violating copyright laws when printing them. Good luck though!

FWIW

If one is interested in saving trees, why would you want someone else (JDE,
print shop) to kill the trees instead of you? What is the difference? Why
not just print the manuals once yourself, duplex it if you want, and then
get on with life.

Anyway........
