Customizing the Left Hand E1Menu

Is it possible to customize the Left Hand E1Menu? I have some clients that find it hard to navigate through the small text and color schemes used.

I hope I'm wrong and this has since changed, but I've always been told that it can't be done. Or more exactly, shouldn't be done.

I hope someone has a quick and dirty way of doing it.

It needs to be opened up, the default is cluggy and a big problem with some users.

Are there any other options that you guys have found?? Custom launch panels, etc... Share the wealth!
