Grant,
you might want to try and change the data type for the field to a numeric
but then you must ensure that you find all objects which use it and
restablish the link with this field which you have changed. I can't promise
this will work but i guess its worth a try.
Please keep the list informed of how this goes as im sure someone else will
come across this issue sooner or later.
