Very Slow Performance on Enterprise Server

Oneworld B733.2 NT 4.0 SQL Server 7.0.

Twice over the past week our Enterprise server slowed to a crawl with the
CPU running at 100%. The first time it took a couple of hours then it got
back to normal. The second time I re-booted after having all users log off
and shutting down JDE and SQL services did not work. On the NT TASK MANAGER
I noticed two processes that were running on and off. They were CMD.EXE and
CL.EXE. The CL.EXE is a C++ optimizing compiler but what ever it does , I do
not know. Has anyone an idea where it is coming from?

Thanks,

Crawford Winter

Upgrade to AS/400 Quad (64-bit) Processors and 16GB of memory.

I would say that builds were occurring. CL.exe is the
C-Linker.

You may be having a problem with SQL taking up all the available memory on your
server. We had this issue and set the amount of memory available for SQL on the
server to a fixed memory size. When you start up SQL server services on the
enterprise server, it will automatically grab the amount of memory you've set for
SQL and won't use any more.

To do this, go into enterprise manager, under SQL server group and right click on
the server name. Select properties. Go to the memory tab and select use fixed
memory size (MB). It should display the min & max available. I have 2GB available
on my servers and have set this to approx 1500 MB. I also have the reserve physical
memory for SQL server checkbox checked, with the minimum query memory set to 1024.

This resolved my problems. If it doesn't work for you, you can always change it
back.

Susan, a number of replies came back for my problem. Most of them identified
that I was running a server package build at the time. Therefore, I will no
long attempt it during the day. I will however take note on your suggestion
of restricting memory on SQL.
