Overseas Shipments with multiple Modes of Transport

We are working on a business model where large volume shipments are performed to overseas customers. The first leg consists of several truck shipments from the plant to a nearby port. These quantities are then loaded onto a container for vessel transportation. Inventory visibility might be required for the port as some quantities may not be loaded on the vessel due to storage limitations.

The requirement is to generate shipping documents per truck and to generate one invoice per vessel load. We have attempted to use intermodal shipments but have faced the limitation in consolidating the multiple truckloads into one vessel. We plan to create an actual/dummy branch/plant at the port and divide the shipments into 2 separate transactions (transfer order to port, sales order to customer from port) but are looking for a better solution in ATM. We’d appreciate any ideas/suggestions for solving this case.

Thanks and regards,

Ozan,

"We have attempted to use intermodal shipments but have faced the

Q: What is the limitation that you face with loading multiple shipments
onto one load representing the vessel? Are you creating the Intermodal
Shipments for each leg and then putting the shipment for the second leg
onto your vessels' load?

Observation: Creating a seperate warehouse representing the Port makes
sense if that is where you are packing the goods and having to make
adjustments to the order quantities. This of course removes the intermodal
issue above, otherwise you would need to look at Dispositioning the goods
off the Load that contains the 2nd leg of Shipment (scary).

Craig

Craig,

Firstly, we haven't used Load management so far. Our intention was to have an intermodal setup having the 1st leg as truckloads and the 2nd as the vessel. We then made partial releases to the sales order that represent the truckloads. The issue in this case is managing quantities that are not loaded onto the same vessel. However, the main problem we're facing is printing one invoice per vessel as we are using a 3rd party software (TRA/X) that cannot consolidate multiple ATM shipments into one invoice.
The port warehouse has its own drawbacks but we couldn't figure out another alternative.

What could be the advantages of using loads, and/or delivery confirmation?

Thanks,

Ozan,

As I mentioned last time, I believe that you are doing the right thing by
setting up a seperate warehouse at the Port. Trying to manage adjustments
to the "2nd leg only" of an Intermodal Shipment sounds really, really scary.

As for the advantages of using Loads and/or Delivery Confirmation...

At your new Port warehouse, you can consolidate your Customer Orders
(Shipments) onto one vessel (aka Load) and produce Picking and Delivery
Documents at Vessel level. If your 3rd Party Invoice Printing is
constrained by Shipment you may be think about turning on Shipment
Consolidation on for this Branch, although hopefully you will only have 1
Shipment per Customer Order in this warehouse now.

The Load Confirmation also allows you to confirm ship all the Shipments on
the Vessel in one hit.

Possible scenarios...

1. Use Ship Confirm (P4205) to Pick each Order
2. Build Load (Vessel)
3. Use Load Confirm (P49640) to Confirm Shipments and produce delivery
documents

1. Build Load (Vessel)
2. Print Loading Note
3. Use Load Confirm (P49640) to Confirm Shipments, Ship Confirm Orders and
produce delivery documents

The other requirement for Loads is when your Freight Costs are calculated
at the Vessel or Truck level and you have multiple Shipments on a
Vessel/Truck.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Craig
