savchgobj on AS/400

[frown] Good morning, List.
XE does not seem to be updating the change date on our AS/400 files when they are updated through JDE. Because of this, we are not capturing some of our files on the SAVCHGOBJ backup nightly. Others must have encountered this problem; could you let me know how you handled this problem? Thank you for any help.

Hmmm....this would be anomylous as far as I'm concerned. Are you sure
you're hitting the objects you think you are? Is your LIBL correct?

This would be a OS/400 issues and it would seem that the midrange-l list
would be howling if it had been found to be a system issue before now...

What rls of os/400 are you?

And, have you talked with Rochester yet on this?

We noticed the same thing about obj change date. We looked at some objects that we know the data was changed, and they were backed-uped though the object changed date hadn't been modified.
Have you printed a log of what was saved and compared it to what you know had been changed?

Just curious.

No, we haven't. We are doing some conversions, ran some UBEs to update
files, and did a DSPOBJD to double-check that the UBE did, in fact, update
the files. We found the last changed date was not updated. It appears that
DSPFD shows the change date on the member correctly.

We (were) quite sure that the SAVCHGOBJ works off the object change date,
not the member, but, you're right, we should test it. Perhaps it works off a
flag that is set when the data is changed instead. If so, you learn
something new every day!

I will try a SAVCHGOBJ on one object that I know has changed, and see what
happens when I have a minute.

We have calls in to JDE and IBM on this. So far JDE says it's an IBM
function, so not in their arena. Will keep List updated on what we find.

Re: RE: savchgobj on AS/400

... maybe I'm totally off but look at the SAVCHGOBJ command parameter OBJJRN. If it's set to *NO, journaled objects will not be saved. We changed the command default to *YES.

Re: RE: savchgobj on AS/400

We opened a call with IBM on this issue, and their answer is that SAVCHGOBJ does not work off the DSPOBJD nor the DSPFD. Changes are kept in a separate index that SAVCHGOBJ looks at. They did not give us the name of the index or where it lives. But, we're satisfied. We've tested several files, and it appears they are saving ok. Thanks to everyone for your responses.

Re: RE: savchgobj on AS/400

OK,

I'd run into this several years ago and frankly had just forgotten what
was going on so I just got a clarification from Al Barsa...

SAVCHGOBJ does NOT use the last change date. When you "change" an object,
down deep in the system object table is a little bit that gets turned on.
SAVCHGOBJ looks for that bit on the object.

The date of last change and the bit flipper are not updating each other
and haven't for a while.
