Product Packaging across diff systems

Is it possible to cut a prd pkg CD from one system say from an =
environment which is on SP 15 and apply to a system with SP17 or =
greater?. What will happen if the there are modifications made to the =
JDE objects (Eg P4210,P4310 etc..) and there are custom objects (Eg =
System code from 56-60).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

AS400Guru,

I will say a qualified "Yes". Product packages are essentially ESU's. Just as an ESU direct from JDE can be applied under multiple service packs, I would say that PP could as well. In terms of base JDE objects versus custom (55-60) objects, PP does not discriminate. You can add either one or both to your packages.

I have had pretty good luck with PP. The only aspect of PP that I avoid is using it to distribute UDC's and Data Dictionary changes. In order to do this you have to generate the delta between a Pristine copy of those tables and the environment you are generating the Product Package from. This is extremely slow going and may take a few hours to calculate. If you use Product Packaging weekly or every couple of days, this is a hassle. So for the most part I just use PP for Objects and versions.

Guru :

It's possible. Just use regular ESU generation procedures.
For example, when JDE releases an ESU it doesn't take in account on what
SP level are all its users.
Of course, some minimal SP requirements apply, but I could install ESUs
that were generated on an Xe SP13.1 installation to a SP17.1 site and
no problems appeared.

You need to concern yourself with ESU levels. You may
bring across an object that has dependancies on a
certain level of an ESU applied. I would make sure
that either the same ESU's have been applied to both
systems or do the Product Packaging immediately after
an Update (3,4,etc.)

I have been burned in the past by the simplest ESU
mismatch on source and target systems. The worst was
where a BSFN brought over was calling another BSFN
that simply was not on the new system because the ESU
had not been applied.

Proceed with caution.

ESU's *do* take into account the SP level.

Sebastian, you have offered some incredibly useful
information in the past but I think you may want to
rethink your advice here.

There are many, many dependancies that are troublesome
for ESU distribution and it seems to be getting worse.
I would be very careful slinging Product Packages
around.

Thanks-
Could you guys please tell me whether it is okay to cut the CD for the
Custom Objects....(55-60), these are the ones which are built from scratch.
I beleive that if you have a copy of the JDE object and rename it to a
custom (55-60) and have some modifications to it...there will be issues with
ESU's.
Any inputs?.

Thanks,

I have seen this done before and it should not be a problem.

I think that Product Packaging can be done across different OW systems with different SP levels. A great number of ESU's made available of the SP level. However as 'Brother' inferred you will need to review this for each product package and this will make change management become even more of a headache.

AS400Guru,

I am in no way well informed on the development side of things, but this might help. I believe you are in more danger of losing your mods to ESU changes if you are making changes to JDE versions. ESU's ignore objects that are version 55-60. You may, however, experience an issue if the template that a custom version is based on is changed significantly. Did that help?

Good Luck.
