classes

Does anyone have any thoughts regarding the Development tools classes? We
are considering sending our developers to these classes because their jobs
will entail interoperability between our other systems and One World XE.

Prior to beginning our XE install, 5 IT people took development classes;
some only Developer1, others both Developer1 and 2.

Several months into the project, these are my thoughts:
1) Make sure the training is timely. There was some time lag between
training and actual use of the tools, so developers had to come back up to
speed.
2) We are AS/400, also, and use ASC's Sequel product to interface to legacy
systems and generate data for the z-file loads. Be sure developers are
proficient in some form of SQL.
3) We took all of our training in Denver, due to the concentration of
resources at hand in that training center. This worked out well for us.
4) Your developers will need a good understanding of OMW, and how your
development/promotion/package build life cycle is set up in your company.
The Developer classes just give you the basics of OMW.
5) We singled out one developer to become our report writer expert, and she
has been writing all of the UBE's thus far. Another developer, who has been
doing mainly interactive applications, is now taking on some of those
report-writing responsibilities to back her up. This has worked out well,
so far, for us.

Good luck!

Hello Libbi,
Yes, I have thoughts regarding the Development Tools classes; as a matter of facts, being a Programmer/Analyst and having already taken 5 out of the existing 15, I have a LOT of thoughts about them. In order to have your developers acquire MINIMAL interoperability skills, they need:
A The Foundation, which is
-System Fundamentals
B The Basics, which is:
-Both Report Writing
-Both Dev Tools classes
-Design Batch Applications
-Maintaining C Business Functions,
C The last step in their training-path:
-Table Conversion, and, finally
-Interoperability Solutions.
If I were you, I would look into having the training offered @your office place & as continuous as possible. You'll discover that it will be:
a - less costing for your company (transport & accommodations expenses for the trainer ONLY), and
b - definitely more efficient, having the training done within your Dev Environment instead of the poor brain-washed Standalone (which is SO far from your REAL OW setup, and which is used - sometimes -as an excuse to avoid dealing with REAL issues).
c - a unique opportunity to have the trainer discover ACTUAL issues your system configuration has, and you ignored :)
Warm regards,
Adrian Chimirel
PS Should you require any further thoughts, do not hesitate to let it be known, and I'll be glad to share them, all.
