Custom environments

Hi List,

We're currently implementing OneWorld financials and payroll at our corporate head office. The management wants to create separate environments one for financials and one for payroll. These environments would share Central Objects and Version but would have separate Business Data and Control Tables. Has anyone done anything like this? Any feed back on pros and cons of creating separate environments or keeping them together in the regular production environment would be gladly appreciated. Security is the major issue(SQL). I would prefer to see them in the same environment. That would make it a lot easier to manage on my end.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin :

It's technically possible, but it's also a huge mess.
For example, financials and payroll share a lot of tables (such as
Address Book). If you want to keep them separated, be ready to think on who
or what is going to synchronize them.
If you want to keep peeping eyes out of your payroll tables, you
should better implement both OneWorld and MSSQL Security criteria on
the information you want to hide.

A critical factor is whether your payroll run journals and vouchers
need to be processed through your financials GL for an integrated company
"picture". If you do operate in separate environments you will need to
maintain the chart of accounts and quite a piece of the financial
infrastructure in both, with all the associated overhead.
If security of your data is a principal concern, that can be handled
nicely with OneWorld row security on, say *ALL for specific companies and
cost centres and with action and application security for each of your user
groups in finance and payroll.
