RE: Remote Development

Hi!

My answers are :

a) Yes PCAnywhere or ControlIT (from CA), a fat client for every remote
developer
b) You need at least 128 Kb and 250 ms ping to run a WAN client in an
acceptable way.
c) I strongly recommend the PCAnywhere/ControlIT solution.

Bye

Xe, HP-UX, Oracle 8.1.6, W2K with Metaframe 1.8 Terminal Servers

Our client (comprised of 5 regional offices) is wanting to do ad-hoc
reporting remotely. We are running on TSE. I was wondering how larger
clients out there are handling remote report development. Specifically:

Are you using PCAnywhere to connect to a fat client? Do you have 1 fat
client for each remote developer?

Is anyone able to run a fat client over a WAN and if so - what is your
bandwidth and is the response time acceptable?

Many of you have mentioned that report development is now possible on
Terminal Server with Xe. I called JDE on this and after some research this
is what the response line guy told me. He said that you cannot create or
modify a UBE template on TSE. You can only modify the version template. He

also said that you cannot checkout the version - you can only create a new
one or copy an existing one and modify that one. Once you check that
version in - you can no longer modify that version - you would need to copy
it and name it something else. If this is in fact the way it works - this
is not an acceptable solution for us. Has anyone experimented with this yet

or have any other insight?

You can send your opinions/experiences directly to me if you would like.

Thanks in advance.
Melissa

Re: Remote Development

A note on the Control/IT-PCAnywhere deal. JDE will not support PC Anywhere
on a machine with JDE, only Control/IT. Also, never put PCAnywhere onto any
server (deployment/enterprise at the least) running JDE. The problem is that
PCAnywhere installs and runs services which interfere with JDE services. I
had package builds consistently fail while PCA was on the server.(the spec
builds and merges would keep failing). Once removed, they went through fine.
From my understanding, Control/IT does not install and run services like PCA
does..and I have not had any problems with Control/IT on any of the servers.
Anyone else have similar experiences?

RE: Remote Development

John,
How do you know that PCAnywhere services are interfering with JDE
services? We have an NT enterprise server running PCAnywhere and JDE
services and I haven't had any problems with package builds and/or
deployments. But, occasionally we get a failure to connect to the NT
Enterprise Server. I'm wondering if the PCAnywhere services running might
have something to do with this intermittent problem we can't duplicate.

RE: Remote Development

Please....please don't use PCAnywhere with JDE. ControlIT is their favorite
and it works fine.

RE: Remote Development

I have used Remotely Possible and NetOp on the deployment server with no
problems.

Our one developer who develops off-site uses NetOp to connect to a NT fat
client we have set up here. Slow, but it does work.

RE: Remote Development

Who cares if JDE has a preference for Control IT? Unless it's mission
critical for you to have JDE dial into your network every few days, I
wouldn't bother with it myself.
If you really need it, then buy 1 copy or use shareware (unless you really
like it), but I wouldn't base my purchases for remote control software on
JDE's corporate preferences. They couldn't even give us a good reason why
they chose it.
I prefer to use something that has a proven track record like PC Anywhere,
or is free like VNC. I've never had a problem with either of these, but I
don't have an NT enterprise server either, just a deployment server and some
workstations running them.
I usually install VNC as a service, but set the service to manual in the
Control Panel. Then if I need to get into it, I can turn the service on
using Server Manager from another server or a PC with Resource Kit
installed. This may help avoid any possible resource drains or conflicts.
I usually do all my initial connecting across the web through Citrix
Client, or through a OW published app on the web. I also setup a VNC menu
item in OW which lets me get into any of our NT servers that are running
VNC.
I only do CNC, no development, but it's kinda cool to be building a
package on one machine, purging some old UBEs from another, and transfering
objects on another, all at the same time from home with no worries about
memory violations because one machine is getting pounded.
One of our developers has also been using this method to get into his work
PC from home for almost a year with no problems. But alas, you do need a
dedicated workstation for each developer.

Re: Remote Development

The reason that control/IT is always favored by JDE is that it does not
install any drivers or services, it is a cleaner application. We have had
builds fail, once the service(s) for PCA were stopped, the builds completed
normally. This was on the enterprise and the deployment. I don't have any
experience with the TSE and PCA. We have never had the spec build or merge
problems with Control/IT like we did when we ran PCA...maybe it was just us,
but JDE is pretty adamant about not running PCA on a server...??

Re: Remote Development

I just finished using PCa to do remote
development. I dialup up to the client (RAS), and
started up PCA, hooked on to a machine that was a PCa
host and had JDE on it, and worked away. Granted it's
slow (real slow) but it works just fine.

as far as running PCa on a server, I have not tried
that.

Re: Remote Development

The below is not really true...am working for a client now that has PCA
running as a service on all servers and workstations, and have never had
an issue with OneWorld, either on server or client machines.

I do believe that earlier versions of PCA did cause OneWorld issues, but
if you using anything past V9.0 of PCA, and your NT boxes are up to date
with SP's, you can safely run PCA on the servers or clients.

JDE may not support it, but they don't support a lot of things that
actually work.
