I am considering purchasing this book. Has anyone used it with One World Xe? If so what is your recommendation?

Thanks
Roger

Roger,
Do you have already the original JDE OneWorld XE documentation CD?

IMHO I'll be blunt and say don't. It's touted as a developers guide but as
a developer I was really disapointed with it. Much of the book is in
generalities that are covered better in the manuals you can download from
the KG, no specifics are given about how to do things which is what I would
expect from a 'Developers Guide'. No details on what the commands in ER
mean and do and no details about how to structure programs eg. parent/child
sections and how to use them is covered in about half a page and that is
very vague. I could go on but you get the idea. There are some good
sections on the more advance topics but in general its not worth it.

The book JD Edwards One World - A Developers Guide by Hester & Enyeart. The
book is pretty good (much better before we went to Xe) but some things have
changed since Xe. The book covers the Object Librarian but not the Object
Management Workbench. It is more difficult to get any documentation on Xe
since it is so new. We had difficulty getting documentation on OMW but were
sent a couple of documents and a CD (which had a couple of corrupt files on
it. I can send you the document on OMW if you like.

The book is pretty good as some of the basic stuff is the same, but there
are some wrinkles from One World and One World Xe. I would still recommend
getting the book though.

I can't speak to how it covers Xe, but we have it and use it regularly. It
is a fairly good book, but a little too general in many technical areas.
Often it does little more than cover what is in the JDE manuals, which, for
anyone who has used the manuals can attest, is frustrating at times. I still
consider it better than the manuals, but not as good as it could be, as it
still leaves many quesions unanswered.

bob

Yes, it is a very good book to have in your collection of reference manuals. Really explains quite a lot about ONEWORLD from a developer's point of view.

However, it could provide more examples...One problem I had was to total up columns in a grid, the manual and Book states that 'Last Grid rec Has Been read' is where you can total lines to the Grid. But nowhere does It say how or are any examples provides.

Personally, I reviewed the book after a friend spent the 75 bucks and decided to skip it. At least 90% of the info is available in the ow guides (flawed as they are). There are a few decent chapters on advanced topics, but they didn't really sway me.

If you are a programmer with a steady job (ie, not a travelling consultant), this could clear some of the clutter off your bookshelf by replacing most of the twelve manuals they handed out in developer immersion, but I can't do anything with it on the road! Maybe if they put a cd with it that I could pack.

If you're an experienced ow developer, don't waste your time.

If you're a new-comer, this may serve as a nice security blanket for a couple of weeks.

But if you're on your way to xe, skip it...no omw = no use for those of us just looking for net change info.
