Configurator

This is my first post to this list so be gentle...
Experience is KING... Thank you all in advance for any and all advice...

Let me introduce myself and my issue.

My name is Wes Suderman and i recently went to work for a Furniture
Manufacture and reseller. Over the last year we have been implementing JDE
World version A7.3 Cum 11. Things are Working As Designed (WAD), not the way
we need. So, on to the background & issues...

The basic issue we have is how to tell what options a piece of furniture
has...
Our furniture line is divided into to basic parts;
1. Manufactured items
We are currently using configurator for our manufactured items. configured
options include the Leather. Each item master is the model type and grade
(one number/record).
When complete the Work Order number is assigned as the LOT/Serial number so
that each item is unique and can be specifically selected for delivery.
No real issues here...

2. Resale items
These are Non-configured items. During the design it was decided to setup the
item masters for each model and leather grade (one number/record), same as
manufactured items without configurator or lot/serial number assigned.
Consequently we are having all kinds of issues with inventory levels,
Backorders not happening, incorrect SO status... The system will show on-hand
quantity of 5 for item BLAH-10, each one actually has a different color, but
the system or user has no way to tell which is which or if the correct color
is in stock!!!

If you made it this far, THANKS!!!
Here is the question... Which direction???? or both????
Keep in mind that changes are weekly for us so ease of maintenance is
important!
1. Should we change to use configurator on resale items as well?
IF SO...
Would this work even though no work orders are created?
How would existing Inventory be affected?
How would existing Inventory be converted?

2. Should we set the Resale items to use lot/serial numbers?
IF SO...
How would we be able to tell the color differences?
One lot per color or one lot/serial number per piece?
How would existing Inventory be affected?
How would existing Inventory be converted?

Thanks in advance....

Re: [Re: Configurator ]

That would only work if the Item master was unique to the color or Leather.
The Item master record would be for SOFA-10 the description would be the
model name like "Tundra". The problem is that the Tundra comes in about 400
different colors or leathers. multiply this by the number of feet options,
Sleeper options, Nail head options, etc... the number of unique items and
numbers gets into the billions( 1,296,000,000
to be exact). This was just to many, so this is why we are looking for
alternatives...

Is there a reason you can't put the color in the item description?

Wes, you're going to really hate this answer. Hire a competent configurator
consultant - one with good references - then listen to them. If you can't
find one, drop me a note and I will try to send you a list. My name will
not be on that list.

Re: [RE: Configurator ]

Thanks Richard...
We started out with several consultants, one of which Learned configurator
during the implementation. He is the one who helped us get it working for out
manufactured items.

Anyway, Are you saying that configurator will work for items purchased without
creating a workorder??
PS. I do not mind brutal honesty as long as it is construtive...
Thanks again,
Wes
