Fortunately, having just downloaded it, I can say that the free product is the latest ESXi 3.5 U2.

In case you haven't heard, there is a show-stopper bug with the current release of ESX and ESXi.

A patch has been released, but if you are downloading the free product for the first time, I suggest you wait until August 14 as the from-scratch installation file will be refreshed tonight.
