Data Item Change

Hello List,

Has anyone had experience of changing the length of a character data item? I
have been requested to change DL01 from 30 to 37 characters but everything I
read tells me don't do it!

Regards,

Graham.

DON'T DO IT!!!

Sorry, I just had to say it one more time :)

I'll list a few ways of getting what you want below...if none of these
applies, please send a description of your specific issue and I'll try and
come up with something else:

1 - create a new dd item that is 37 characters in length...best if used in a
new application or as a variable of some sort.

2 - if the DL01 item is a variable on a report, simply use the item
properties to display it as 37 characters.

3 - if you are working with DL01 as a column in a table, refer to OneWorld
guides on what an upgrade preserves. In cases where you need to expand the
length of an item stored in a table, it is best to create a tag file. Chat
with a developer about that. It still may be challenging, but a lot less
disruptive to the rest of OneWorld, and you stand a chance going through an
upgrade. While the guides may say it's simple to change the length of a
data item (and it is!), the trickle down effect (through tables, business
view, applications, business functions etc.) is enormous. And the DL01 item
is used EVERYWHERE! Personally, I've seen a customer change the length of
AN8 and bring down OneWorld instantaneously. DL01 isn't that far off.

Finally, if this is a developer who is making the request, check his/her
credentials! They should know better.
