Ben,

Did you try running report P03701? This is an integrity from F0311 to
F0911. Usually any out of balance condition will be caught by this. The
only thing this report would miss is the case where there are some
orphan records in F0911 with no corresponding records in F0311. Now to
catch such situation one can run another report P007021. This will give
you all those transactions which have hit G/L but didn;t hit A/R.

Depending on the data in your files, both these reports might take
quite some time to run.

Now as for the reason as to why this might have happened, there can be
many. One of the common ones is that if the I or R batch posting job
gets killed in the middle, then this would create such out of balance
situations. So that might have happened at some point of time leading
to unbalance situation ever since.
