Oracle ONS and JDEdwards Xe B7333

Is anyone experiencing issues with Oracle Names Server and JDE OW Xe B7333, oracle database and client software 9i - when we configure JDE on the client to use ONS we experience "Unable to connect to database" errors in certain apps. When we resolve the db alias using TNSNAMES this behaviour does not occur. Any ideas? Thanks.
