Promotion Manager

Hello List!

In the past our Development team used to use program P986150 in order to
promote objects from development to CRP and later to PROD and also from
their own machine to the server and other Fat clients. In B73.2 the menu
option to run this function disappeared without a trace. We continued to
use program P986150 from fast path but I have recently been told by JDE not
to use this program anymore that the replacement for this function is now
the Promotion Manager . I can not seem to find any documentation on this
new program.

Has anyone actually used the Promotion Manager? Does anyone have any
documentation on it's use?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Gerald.

Promotion manager is P98603 in B733.2
It works pretty much like Object Librarian.

Gerald,
We use Promotion Manager (P98603 on GH908) daily, looking for two different things:
1 - Query: an easy way to find out the checked out objects on a workstation.
2 - Promote: as far as I know it does the same thing OL is doing when checking in (modified) objects.
Its usage is pretty straight forward (couldn't find documentation either; heard about it at SWRE Mods Deployment classes); Click Find, then Select object to be promoted, fill in Destination, click Promote and ... you're done! The JDE person that suggested using Prom. Manager should know where or should send the documentation you're looking for; if you get it, share it, please.

Adrian Chimirel

Gerald,

It sounds like you may have been one of the initial brave souls to take on
OW!

It is true, things have changed since then. I would recommend perusing one
of the following manuals (like the programs, naming depends on the
release)...Package Management, OW Modifications and Deployment. There are
probably other variations on those themes. Any of them should refer to the
"Object Transfer" program which moves objects between pathcodes (ex. crp to
prod). Though I have heard of people out there using Promotion Manager, it
was not the preferred program pushed out of JDE. They preferred you use two
programs Object Librarian (to move the objects client to server and back)
and Object Transfer (to move objects between pathcodes). This allows for
the transfer to be more easily secured as an administrative function, but
the security in Object Librarian is of course open wide for checking into
production (gotta love that!)

That is why there is so little written on Promotion Manger. In fact, I'm
pretty sure that program was not really maintained that diligently by
development after the advent of Object Transfer.

I have been around all this stuff since the beginning so if you have any
questions in making the swith, feel free to ask :)
