Has anyone out there done anything with exponential numbers?, i.e. can you
set up something that will take a number on the database like 0.0000001 and
convert it to display as 1.00e-7.

The only way I could see to do it is to split it into 2 fields, one is the
number part, e.g. 1.00 and the second a UDC which is the exponential bit,
e.g. E-7. Then the second description in the UDC holds the number, e.g. -7
as the divisor/multiplier. This is obviously messy so there must be someone
who has done something similar?

Let's see. I have never handled exponential number even so I have some coins.

If displaying exponential format is your problem only but storage then you can write your own Display Rule business function (C or NER) to accomplish this.
* You can attach this BSFN to the data item as Display Rule in the Data Dictionary
OR
* You can override Display Rule of Data Items with this BSFN on the Data Item Properties sheet in FDA and RDA.
OR
* You can call it directly from ER to generate your formatted number.
