OWXe Coexistence install questions

We are World looking at going to OWxe coexistence. I have some
questions for the hardware/software we need to purchase to accomplish
the install.

Deployment server:
1) Is SQL server still needed if CO are installed on the AS/400?

2) Per the MTR, MS Access is required. Why?

Web server:
1) If the server is NT and you are using IIS for the server, are the
following other software packages required? If so, why?
* WebSphere 3.5
* JDK

2) How many users can we expect to get on a web server that is a
Proliant DL580 P3/700 with 2Gb RAM running Win2K?

Thanks!

If Central Objects are on AS/400, then SQL is not needed. Keep in mind that package builds are faster if Central Objects are on the deployment server.

MS Access is used for two things.
1. If replication is turned on, then it replicate the data to the local Access database.

2. Access is needed on the deployment server because installation databases are in Access.

Sandbox: installing Xe

Kevin :

1) On AS/400 OW, SQL is not needed but recommended. Packages take less time
on SQL than
on DB2/400.
2) It's not mandatory to have Access, JDE uses ODBC Access driver provided
by MS; but it's
convenient to have Access installed on a development machine just in case
you need to manually
alter a table.
3) JDE uses WebServer as the servlet administrator for its Java components.
JDK components
are downloaded for free from Sun, Microsoft, IBM.
4) As a rule of thumb, you may expect as many users on the Web Server than
on the WTS.
10-15 users every CPU, 30-50 Mb every user.

1. No, When you are storing central objects natively on the 400, you don't
need SQL server.

2. I'm not definite on this, but I believe Access is just a "nice to
have". You can use it to access the databases on the deployment server
directly, vs going through OneWorld. This can make trouble shooting
easier. I have done installs without Access and they were fine, however, I
am not in a development or production environment, so I can't say if ther
are times down the road, after the install, when you need it..

3. Yes, WebSphere and JDK are required. WebSphere runs the java
application server

4. I can't vouch for lowly Compaq servers, but a superior quality
Netfinity 2-way, 2GB machine will handle around 100 users. We found that a
given machine will handle more web users than it could have WTS users.
Also, WTS was more memory bound. Webserving is more processor intensive.

Can only speak for Access. It is required for the deployment server.

RE: Re[2]: OWXe Coexistence install questions

Kevin :

As a mother of fact, I've installed a bunch of OneWorld installations
without putting Access
on the Deployment.
Strictly speaking, JDE needs just the Access ODBC driver to access the
installation .MDB bases;
nevertheless, Access .MDB files corrupt very easily and I've found that it's
very convenient
to have install the Access product on the Deploymetn to repair its databases
and/or edit
manually their tables.
Anyway, you'll need Access licenses sooner or later because its interface is
much easier than
SQL Query Analyzer or Oracle Query and developers love the way you can alter
data with it during
development stages.

Yours, Sebastian
