How to data copy iSeries 400 World A73 to Wintel SQL server running One World 8.9?

We have One World 8.9 running on a WINTEL SQL server but not as a true production environment. It's just out there for learning, experimentation, and play. We have World A73 running on an iSeries at v5r2; we also run B733-SP23G One World coexistent. We want to migrate/copy the World data into the 8.9 environment and turn our business systems analysts loose to experiment, learn, and plan for a full upgrade to 8.10 or 8.11 for later this year later. This later upgrade will stay on the iSeries. So, this data migration now is from coexistent World/Xe data to WINTEL SQL 8.9. I am looking for a basic plan outline and an inventory of resources that will be used or need to be acquired. How can this be achieved or any other advice?

There are multiple ways to accomplish this. You can use MS SQL Tools, EnterpriseOne UBE's, or a combination of both. One deciding factor will be the size of the data. I think all you will need is a good CNC resource who is familar with MS SQL and the EnterpriseOne upgrade process. I'm guessing it will take a couple of days to plan, copy, and convert the data depending on the size of the data.

I contacted Oracle/PeopleSoft but directed my query to the World Support staff. So the standard reply of terminate coexistence and install 8.9 to the iSeries, and apply Y2PTF was given. The person was very helpful and said that may be other ways and I could resubmit my query to the E1 side of the house, so to speak. I plan to resubmit the query to E1 staffing.

I've done some searching through this forum and others on this site before posting this query. One interesting admonition is copied/pasted here...

This is relatively easy for a senior CNC specialist to perform. The final conversion can be done in a weekend if done properly. There should be a number of times that the data is converted beforehand - but use OneWorld to convert the data - do NOT do this directly in SQL.

Paul: Any idea why the warning not to use SQL? Have you done such a copy/conversion?

I'd use a table conversion routine in 8.9 to import data. You could try to run DTS and import data from the 400 directly into SQL Server. Or you could use query analyzer and import data through a SQL command. If you want examples, email me at [email protected]
