Changing UPC codes

Changing UPC codes seems to create a huge bottleneck on our system.
Performance monitoring shows a very dramatic increase in disk activity, and
this process can take up to 20 minutes. Users change this field by going to
item master and taking a row exit to storage, changing UPC there, and then
in the item master. Has anyone else experienced this delay? Is there any
way of improving this process?

Which tables does the UPC field reside in. Could it be that all of your lot/location records need to be changed when your users change the UPC code? It could be that many records are being changed or it could be that many records are just being read because you do not have an index that should be there. I would work with PS on it.
