Foreign characters not printing on line printer

when I print a report that contains French characters on a PostScript printer, the pdf comes out okay. However, when I send the report to a line printer, there are codepage issues that arise. The French characters are not printing. Instead, the characters are garbled by some weird ASCII symbol.

Any thoughts,

years ago, there used to be a separate printing band that was loaded on the printer in order to get different character sets for line printers. I don't remember how they were loaded or accessed.
